Paveil is one of the oldest properties in the Medoc, going back almost 200 years. It is situated in Margaux, home to many of the finest producers in Bordeaux. In spite of all that, the thing that impressed us the most is that it is owned by the de Luze family. That name is one of the most iconic in Bordeaux. Our association goes back to the beginning of the Wine of the Month Club.

Petite Paveil is the name they give to what is commonly called a "second label." It is anything but. The laws in Bordeaux are very strict. If you're in an area like Margaux, you're allowed to make so much wine per acre. This was done to preserve quality, but it was also done 170 years ago when vineyard practices were no relation to what they are today. Besides, when Mother Nature makes up her mind, you get what you get.

The fact is that many times the grapes that came from the vines that were over the limit are just as good as the rest. They just can't call it the same thing, so they go into a different label, like ones named "Petit."

That is why we love these wines. They are almost the same as the big name, but without the big price. Ours is a classic Bordeaux with richly textured blackberry, earth, saddle leather, and licorice for days. The density and extract are mouth filling and ready for a prime rib or steak Diane with black and green peppercorns.
