Mullan Road Cellars is a journey into Washington winemaking led by Dennis Cakebread of Cakebread Cellars. Drawn by the high quality of wines and the camaraderie of the Walla Walla wine community, Dennis and winemaker Aryn Morell worked with the famed Seven Hills Vineyard on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley appellation as well as vineyards in the soon-to-be-recognized Royal Slope appellation to craft this powerful yet elegant Bordeaux-style Red Blend.

A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, this wine highlights explosive aromas of fresh blackberries, plum skin and fresh juniper berries intermixed with dried strawberry and sandalwood. Swirling brings up ripe black currants, baking spice and creme de cassis. The palate is dense and polished with superfine tannins and great length. It's mouthwateringly fresh with ripe but restrained fruit and terrific presence.

As a self-described "history buff," Cakebread wanted to honor U.S. Army Lieutenant John Mullan. In 1859'1860, Mullan commanded a group of soldiers, surveyors and engineers to build a wagon road from Fort Benton, Montana to Fort Walla Walla.

The winery's namesake, the historic Mullan Road built in 1859, was a 611-mile wagon trail into eastern Washington via the Rockies and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mullan Road Cellars' illustrated label was inspired by photos of the actual Mullan Road, conveying adventure and a pioneering spirit.

Winemaker Notes
Our first single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine reveals sultry aromas of muddled red fruits, raspberry, and dried strawberry with hints of light baking spices. Swirling brings up notes of crème brûlée with black tea, mocha, and cocoa powder. The palate is round and polished, with black currants and plum purée accented by vanilla bean and balanced by fine tannins. Hints of dark chocolate and pressed berries linger on the finish.

Tasting Panel, 93 points
This blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc sends up vivid soprano notes of lilac and blueberry with base scents of chocolate and balsamic. Floral tones persist on the palate with abundant violets. Cigar leaf comes in midway before the saturation of blue fruit takes over and washes through the oak-kissed finish.

Wine Enthusiast, 91 points
Roasted coffee bean, tar, melted butter and dark chocolate aromas are up front. An assortment of fruit and barrel flavors follow. Lightly chewy tannins back it up. The freshness is compelling.
