2017 Le Caniette Rosso Bello Piceno
Le Caniette was founded in the 1960's by Raffaele Vagnoni who gradually converted his family's land into vineyards. Giovanni, his son, joined the family trade in the early 90's and produced their first estate wines. From first glance, it's easy to see what gives this family's property its unique and expressive wines. The organically-farmed vineyards are filled with Pleistocene clastic rocks, while the Mediterranean climate and the close proximity to the Balkans offer cooling winds to keep the vines thriving in the warm sun. Rosso Piceno offers value from Sangiovese that is nearly impossible to find in the neighboring Tuscany.
Rosso Piceno is one of the 15 (as at November 2012) DOC appellations of the Marche region in Italy. The regulations of this DOC require that the wine be made out of 35-70% Montepulciano grapes and 30-50% Sangiovese grapes, provided that the use of other black-berried grapes is permitted up to a maximum of 15%. The regulations also prescribe that it be produced in an area surrounding the towns of Ascoli Piceno, Pesaro-Urbino and Ancona, while the territory for the variant “Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC” is a much smaller area near Ascoli Piceno.
