2016 Tenuta di Ghizzano Nambrot
A longtime favorite producer of ours, Tenuta di Ghizzano, just south of Pisa.
Nambrot was first made in 1996, using Merlot grapes, and has evolved over the years into a blend together with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, demonstrating the potency, warmth, and character that the territory can express. It is named after the founder of the Venerosi family, whose name was Nambrot and who lived in 830.
Wine & Spirits 92
Notes of nutmeg and spice nod to the 18 months this wine spent in a mix of new and used barriques, but the wood influence is subtle: You can feel the presence of merlot (60 percent) in the wine’s supple tannins and vibrant flavors of plum and raspberry; cabernet franc and petit verdot complete the blend in equal parts, firming up the structure and adding delicate violet scents.
James Suckling 92
Lots of iron, blue-fruit and terracotta aromas following through to the full body. Firm, polished and silky tannins, nice complexity and a flavorful finish.
The 2015 Nambrot is soft, supple and inviting, with good depth to the dark cherry, blood orange, plum, grilled herb and menthol notes. In 2015, Nambrot is distinctly medium in body and gracious in feel. I would prefer to drink it now and over the next few years.
