Valldeorras was settled by the Romans who found it a good area for growing grapes, but it wasn’t until 1885 when the first member of the Prada family began to work with the Godello grape on the steep hillsides. Most of the vines in the area were planted to Godello (white), but a few to Mencia (red). Over the years, the land was broken into smaller pieces and sold to farmers who had little interest in the native grapes. In 2001, some of the Prada’s decided to buy back the old vineyards and revive the noble Godello. Valdesil's two Mencía wines make up a very small proportion of the Bodega's production. The red vineyards comprise old bush vines planted on the south-facing slate slopes around the high-altitude village of O Moullón. The rocky soils, high altitude and cooling Atlantic weather patterns here sculpt juicy, racy, tangy, cherry scented, light to medium bodied reds. The first of Valdesil's reds - the vibrant, mouth-watering Valderroa Mencía 2014 - delivers all these Galician vinous attractions, plus change from a small fist full of dollars. A clear expression of the Atlantic influence and slate soils. High toned and vibrant berry aromas with whiffs of violet, black pepper and subtle smoke. On the palate, raspberry and bitter cherry flavors on a lively backbone of tangy acidity. Fresh, elegant and precise, finishing with persistent berry and floral notes.
