2014 Gerard Mugneret Bourgogne Passetoutgrain
Although he bears the patronym of his well-known late uncle, Dr. Georges Mugneret, and produces some of the finest wine in Burgundy from his uncle's vineyards, Gérard Mugneret is not widely known largely because, as noted wine writer Clive Coates has observed, his wines only rarely reach the export market.
Gérard Mugneret is particularly regarded for his village Vosne-Romanée, whose faithful typicity, rich texture and lush fruit instantly suggest nobler, Premier Cru breeding. Another of Mugneret's wines, the Premier Cru Nuits-St-Georges, Les Boudots, is a clear favorite of new superstar wine writer Allen Meadows, who describes it as 'marvelously seductive and sexy'.
Passetoutgrain translates loosely to 'all grapes allowed', but that would be incorrect as a description. The Bourgogne Passetoutgrain is a wine that brings together the freshness of Pinot Noir and the 'gourmandise' of Gamay. This appellation has character and charm.
