2013 Royal Tokaji Furmint The Oddity
Royal Tokaji was founded in 1990 by well-known author Hugh Johnson and a small group of investors, who were inspired after the fall of Communism to restore and preserve Hungary’s precious wine legacy.
The furmint grape was used for centuries to make sweet wine, but for the past twenty years, Royal Tokaji has been working to produce a dry Furmint and in 2013, began to market it as the Oddity. At least 60% of the wine is fermented and aged in oak.
The Oddity is a crisp wine with lovely acidity. It is complex, elegant and balanced, exhibiting plenty of fruit on the nose and palate. Waxy stone fruits with honeyand lanolin aromas suggest richness, however this is totally dry and surprisingly crisp. Flavors of juicy mandarin and apricots with an herbal tinge extend to a fresh minerally finish.

"The cuvée formally known simply as “Dry Furmint,” The Oddity is especially firm and savory in 2013. It feels tightly packed and withheld, the flavors wrapped in stony layers of minerality; the energy it gives off, a rumble of furmint acidity and volcanic stone, suggests there’s lots more to come. Give it another year and decant for pork trotters."
