2013 Pietracupa Taurasi
Pietracupa was founded in 1990 and is situated in Montefredane, near Avellino, a mountainous terrain where elevation is key in producing wines with great character. Here the young and talented Sabino “Sammy Bruno” Loffredo quickly gained a reputation within Italy and abroad, for some of the best Greco and Fiano wines around. Pietracupa wines represent his style and his idea of the wine world. He is one of the most successful examples of how a small producer can produce great wines that also have wonderful aging potential and become magnificently complex in the bottle.
Taurasi is an important red wine from Campania. Taurasi is based principally on the Aglianico indigenous grape variety produced in the province of Avellino. In spite of Taurasi’s ancient origins, it is also regarded as a modern wine. From the late 1960’s Taurasi has grabbed international attention and since then, the area’s popularity and reputation has soared.
Taurasi, by Pietracupa, boasts a real sense of elegance; both subtlety and depth, power and freshness characterize this red on the nose and the palate. The complex nose combines a wealth of fresh dark fruits, a strong mineral personality with flecks of iron and a gamey, meaty tone. Meanwhile, the palate initially expresses fleshy, red stewed fruits which transform to earthy, animal notes and finally culminates in a long, white-peppery finish. The body is light but possesses a slight creaminess, the tannins are fine and the acidity bright. A powerful but approachable, lovely wine.
