2013 Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee
1858 Jacob Gundlach bought 400 acres in Sonoma. Married his childhood sweetheart, Eva and celebrated his marriage in Germany looking for rootstock to bring to the farm. Jacob and partners planted 60,000 vines in the first year to become the biggest grower in the county. By 1861, they were making wine and brandy.
Charles Bundschu came to America in 1868 and went to work in the produce industry before meeting Jaob and going to work there. He later married one of the Gundlach daughters and became a partner.
In 1870, Phylloxera began to devastate plants so they began to experiment with native rootstock from Texas. These roots lasted until 1969 when they began replanting with new rootstock.
In 1919 prohibition closed the winery but they continued to grow fruit. In 1933 when prohibition was lifted, Walter Bundschu was ready to make wine again, but his wife Sadie was now opposed to alcohol. By 1938 Walter had died and his son, Towle and uncle returned to the farm and sold fruit to Almaden one of the new boutique wineries.
Towle Bundschu continued to farm grapes and eventually made a deal with Louis Martini for the grapes. By 1969 his son Jim was ready to reopen the winery and with is brothers-in-law started making wine again. By 2000 Jim's son Jeff became head of the family business and together they continue to manage the vines and make the wine.
Mountain Cuví©e is a modern American blend that pays homage to the classic red clarets made famous by the vignerons of southwest France. A serious yet easy-drinking red blend, loaded with lush black plum, blackberry, and creamy cocoa flavors, with accents of smoke and black tea. Juicy, creamy and round mouthfeel with soft tannins supporting generous fruit. The long finish is full of dense berries and mocha flavors. A rich, fruit-forward wine intended to be enjoyed within five years of vintage.
