2013 Baxter Caballo Blanco Vineyard Carignan

$ 29.00

Not long ago, David was at the Anderson Valley Winegrowers event. On a tip from a loyal customer, he visited Baxter Wines. The word on the street was that the Baxters (Phillip L and Phillip T.G.) were making wonderful wine.

It is always nice when a tip turns out to be a good one. David tracked down the distributor to see about bringing the wine to SoCal. The Baxters are making wines that are excellent, get super scores, and are fairly priced.

Vineyard:
One of the best-kept secrets in Mendocino County is the many vineyards of old-vine Carignan. Caballo Blanco vineyard is a prime example of the terrific quality found in these unique forgotten vineyards. The vineyard owners show their commitment to quality by dry-farming organically to enhance the terroir and intensity of these 75 year old vines. Naturally low yeilds of 1.5 tons per acre and well drained gravely soil combine to produce a wine of immense depth, balance and character from this under-used varietal.

Wine:
Known for bright red fruit and high acidity, Carignan is typically used in the Southern Rhone to enhance blends. The nose is powerful and intricate with aromas of rose petal, violets, cherry syrup and tabacco leaf. Equally as intense, the mouth is layered with black cherry, raspberry, plum and cola. A rich, round mouthfeel, balanced with bright fruit and acidity give this wine the duality of being enjoyable now as well as the ability to age. Intricately layered, Carignan pairs well with almost any meal, especially rich spicy foods. We produced just 2.5 barrels of this wine that has become highly prized by our club members as well as all those who taste it.

Method:
All our wines are truely hand-made by Phillip Baxter using old-world artisan methods. Harvested by hand and fermented in small batches using native (wild yeast). Hand punch downs follow a cold-soak of several days, then pressing in a gentle basket press. The wine underwent an extra-long aging for 30 months in neutral French oak barrels and held in bottle until the winemaker felt it had started to climb into it's prime drinking period. This wine drinks wonderfully now, but will also continue to age for several years to come.
