Coming from a German winemaking family, Jacob Schram settled on the West Coast with a desire to make wine in America. In 1862, he settled on a piece of Napa Valley property and started the process of clearing and planting. Just over 100 years later Jack and Jamie Davies bought the property (not from Jacob) and began the task of working toward sparkling wine. The program went so fast, that in 1972, the Blanc de Blanc from '69, was served by President Richard Nixon at a dinner with Premier Zhou Enlai beginning a tradition. Every President since has poured Schramsberg sparkling wine (once referred to as Champagne) at White House events.

Today, Hugh Davies runs the business and is co-winemaker having served years under his father as head winemaker. Hugh has had such belief in his sparkling wines that he regularly puts them into competition with the world's best sparkling wines. He often wins. Kelly and David participated in one of those tastings recently and one of the Schramsberg's came in second in a group including Dom Perignon, Cristal, Roederer, Taittinger, Krug and others. Schramsberg sparkling wines are still aged in Jacob Schram's hand-chiseled and black, diaphanous lichen-lined caves in the hills above Calistoga, and hand-riddled. These are incredible wines, on par with French Champagne, and a value by comparison.
