2012 Kilikanoon Blocks Road Cabernet Sauvignon
Kilikanoon was founded in 1997 when Kevin Mitchell purchased a piece of land referred to as Kilikanoon. Kevin’s dad had been managing vineyards for 40 years, but Kevin wanted to turn his fruit into wine. He rounded up some money and a few friends to help him run a business and began making some very fine wines.
The 2012 Clare Valley vintage has widely been described as one of the best in the last decade. The mainly dry conditions, warm days and cool nights slowed down the ripening process and allowed all the Cabernet parcels to achieve optimal flavour accumulation. Quickly becoming one of the leading varieties in the Clare Valley, selected parcels of fruit were hand harvested from two 42 year old vineyards in the Leasingham sub region of the valley, before traditional vinifi cation, basket pressing and 18 months maturation in a combination of seasoned and new French oak hogsheads.
Deep garnet-purple in color and profoundly scented of creme de cassis and eucalyptus with underlying dark chocolate, clove and pencil lead hints, the rich, full-bodied 2012 Blocks Road Cabernet Sauvignon is packed with juicy blackcurrant flavor and structured by medium to firm levels of grainy tannins, lively acidity and a long finish.

Bright purple. Textbook cabernet aromas of cassis, pipe tobacco, pungent herbs and cedary oak, with a smoky topnote. Smooth and expansive on entry, offering pliant dark fruit preserve, vanilla and licorice flavors that tighten up with air. A peppery, spicy quality adds cut to the finish, which features fully enveloped tannins and a touch of sweet chewing tobacco. Flamboyant and fruit-driven to be sure, but there's good structure here as well.
