2011 Romitorio Rosso di Montalcino
The twelfth century fortress hidden atop the mountains of Montalcino was in a state of disarray when artist Sandro Chia acquired the property in 1984. After rebuilding the fields and the buildings, he began to build his state of the art winery and is now making superb wines. Sandro designs the labels, some the most colorful in Italy.
Rosso di Montalcino is a wine which, being a hundred percent Sangiovese, is similar in nature to Brunello di Montalcino but differs in that it is a youthful expression of the Sangiovese grape. It spends its first year maturing in oak casks particular to the complexity of ageing. Once bottled it will then comfortably mature over the next three to five years, growing still finer and more elegant with time, to become a richer, ruby red.
Its full and aromatic aroma, reminiscent of red cherries and violets in an overall well-balanced structure becomes ideal for thoughtful meditations or, if one prefers, as an accompaniment to all meat dishes.
