The viscounts Fuligni were an ancient Venetian family of condottieri and generals who moved to Tuscany around 1770. Even then, wine was made on their properties of Maremma and Scansano. Their Montalcino estate was founded in 1923, and present owner is the exquisite Maria Flora Fuligni, who is flanked by nephew Roberto Guerrini Fuligni, enologist Paolo Vagaggini and agronomist Federico Ricci, in charge of vineyard management. 'The property covers approximately 247 acres east of Montalcino, historically the home to the most classic of Brunellos.

The grapes are vinified separately according to cru, in a classically inspired international style characterized by a strong backbone of acidity and smooth, polished tannins.''The Fuligni range is a complete cross-section of Montalcino offerings, Rosso, Brunello, Super Tuscan, and yearly production goes from an average 3,700 to 4,100 cases. ''All consistently judged among Tuscany's finest, they are aged in the restored convent, which was transformed into barrique cellar, tasting rooms and guest quarters. The former convent's cool, cloistered tranquillity supplies ideal conditions for their elevage.

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG is 100% Sangiovese, this wine is Fuligni Brunello's cr_me de la cr_me, and is only issued in the finest years. From 20-30 year old vines, the grapes are harvested in late September. Must remains on lees for 18 days in stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged five months in steel and 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged 12 months in bottle. The wine shows remarkable elegance and complexity, and a beautiful bouquet of marasca cherries, tobacco and mint, with a lovely, long finish.

Dried fruits with hints of coffee bean and cedar. Full body, with silky tannins and a tangy, savory finish. Almost salty character with ripe fruits. Complex and succulent on the finish. Drink or hold.

Fuligni's 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva captures the richness of the vintage while maintaining plenty of classicism in its structure. Tar, smoke, tobacco, savory herbs and incense emerge from the exotic, highly expressive bouquet. Layers of red fruit build effortlessly through to a deeply resonant finish. Overall, this is one of the best of the 2007 Riservas.
