2007 Fontaine-Gagnard Volnay PC Clos des Chenes 07
It would be fair to say that the Gagnard family tree has a lot of branches. While all Gagnards in this part of the C_te de Beaune are related, this domaine takes its name from Richard Fontaine and his wife, the former Laurence Gagnard. Laurence is a daughter of Jacques Gagnard, who masterfully guided Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange for decades.
Richard Fontaine is a meticulous vigneron. His vineyard regimen is based on the principles of lutte raisson_e (literally reasoned fight), which means he takes an organic approach in meeting the challenges of Mother Nature. Now with the help of his daughter Celine, he tends 20 acres, including parcels in three Grand Cru vineyards and a vast array of Chassagne's best 1er Cru terroirs. In addition, the family has holdings in a top red wine 1er Cru in both Pommard and Volnay.
The 2007 Volnay 1er Cru, Clos-des-Ch_nes shows deep, rich and ripe, with complex black fruit flavors, a hint of liqorice and spice, and long fine juicy tannins on a mineral finish. Very long and fine.
While the nose is what you would expect it to be, which is to say both more elegant and more complex with impressively layered red berry fruit and earth notes, the relatively round and minerally flavors, though delicious, finish with moderate dryness and it's not clear that it will dissipate with time."
