Indigenous to the Valdeorras, Galicia’s easternmost wine zone, the Godello grape was almost lost after the ravages of phylloxera but is now enjoying a brisk revival. Soils on the region’s steep, terraced, high-altitude vineyards are primarily slate, perfect for the cultivation of top quality Godello. The 2018 Pagos del Galir opens with an intense lemon-gold color and aromas of honeysuckle blossoms, freshly cut fennel, tarragon, and pungent minerality. Both brisk and incisive on the palate, the wine alternates crisp citrus, melon, and orchard fruit expressions complicated by notes of menthol, jasmine, and quinine. The wine finishes tense and energetic, balancing its brisk citrus fruit core with its mineral spine, riveting acidity, and tactile saline palate presence.
