2019 Bailly Lapiere Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc
Way back in 2017, the Grape Wrangler, was in Chablis cruising around when his host brought him to the caves of Bailly Lapiere, one of the major producers of Cremant in Burgundy.
The spectacular caves have supplied the stone for some of the greatest architectural works in Europe including the Pantheon, Notre Dame de Paris, Chartres Cathedral and more. The underground extraction probably began at the end of the medieval period and finally ceased around the beginning of the 20th century. The caves and their history are astonishing.
In the northernmost part of Burgundy proper, only four miles from Chablis, right up against the Loire Valley border is the appellation Saint Bris. Grown on the same Kimmeridgien soil as Chablis, on a tiny 250 acre appellation, is the only legal designated Sauvignon Blanc in Burgundy. Pale gold color, limpid and brilliant wine. The bouquet offers a blend of white fruits with a hint of fresh herbs. On aeration, the aromatic palette gives a floral and fruity style with a hint of citrus and blackcurrant flowers. In the mouth, it is fresh with a delicate touch of minerality with the richness of white fruits. Floral and fruity in the end.
100% Sauvignon Blanc
