2016 Parparoussis Assyrtiko PGI Achaia
Hailing from Greece, Assyrtiko [pronounced: A seer' tee ko] requires a bit of explanation.
A white grape that appears to have originated on the island of Santorini, Assyrtiko is versatile, disease resistant and in the past few decades, seen widespread adoptance throughout Greece. The grapes can produce dry or sweet wine, and the Parparoussis Assyrtiko is a dry example. You an expect great mineral character, citrusy notes and good acidic structure.
Assyrtiko is combined with Aidani and Athiri grapes to produce the sweet Vin Santo.
The Parparoussis Winery was founded in 1974 by Athanassios (Thanassis) Parparoussis. the University of Bourgogne in Dijon and worked for awhile at Moet 7 Chandon. After moving back to Greece, he founded Parparoussis Winery in Patras (Greece's 2rd largest city), Peloponnese. He chose to focus on indigenous grapes. His daughters Erifili and Dimitria are heavily involved in the business.
Floral, green apple and pear, light to medium aromatic intensity, quite special in its expression of assyrtiko.
