2013 Luca Chardonnay
Nicholas Catena, PhD in Economics left the family wine business to teach at Berkeley, but eventually was drawn back to the fold to make great Argentine wine. Following in his footsteps, his daughter Laura earned degrees at Stanford and Harvard and became an emergency room physician before returning to the family business. After several years of working to improve the Catena wines, she started her own boutique to produce very high quality wines from some of the most mature vineyards in Mendoza.
Beautiful pale-gold color with enticing aromas of lemon críÂme, baking spices and some notes of dulce de leche. The aromas carry through to the palate, and are joined by hints of tropical fruit, spiced baked pear, and a stony/mineral flavor that creates a stylish wine that seems part New and part Old World. It is among the very best of Chardonnay's from south of the border we have tasted.
