2012 Herdade Do Mouchão Ponte das Canas
Wine Enthusiast 93 points
The most recently created label of the property and with a slightly lighter and more subtle style than Mouchão. It is made from Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Shiraz, also trodden and fermented in lagares. It ages in 300 liters French oak barrels for up to 24 months. It remains in bottle for 12 months before release.
All the grapes are hand-picked. Once in the lagares, the large stone treading tanks, the grapes are foot trodden twice a day until fermentation is complete – roughly 5 to 8 days – before being pumped into one of the many tonéis, the huge wooden vats, where they undergo malolactic fermentation before the onset of winter.Aged in a blend of tropical hardwood ‘tonels’ and new oak barriques and bottled 18-24 months after harvest.
