2018 Ojai Vineyard Pinot Noir Kessler Haak
Adam Tolmach founded his own label, Ojai Vineyard in 1983, along with his wife Helen, but continued as a partner in Au Bon Climat until 1991. Tolmach’s initial vintage consisted of a small amount of Syrah produced at Au Bon Climat. The next year he built a winery in Oak View, near the town of Ojai in Ventura County on land that was left to him by his grandfather. All production has originated here since 1984. Pinot Noir was added to the lineup in the early 1990s, initially sourced from Bien Nacido Vineyard. Through the years, Ojai Vineyard has acquired a cult winery status do its small production and exclusivity. Most of the Ojai Vineyard wines are vineyard-designated originating from Tolmach’s long term relationships in which fruit is bought by the acre.
The fragrance of this wine is powerful and stirring, with a real Californian thing going in its scents of bay laurel and flowering purple sage, along with berry medley and exotic spice aromatics.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Kessler Haak is also straight-up beautiful, with a more masculine, peppery, herbal style to go with plenty of darker cherry fruits, medium body, gorgeous purity, and a nicely structured style that’s going to evolve nicely for at least 8-10 years.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Kessler Haak Vineyard offers an intriguing array of brambly notes and red berry fruit. Medium in body, with striking aromatics, the Kessler Haak has so much to recommend it. The 2018 is maybe not as obvious or direct as some of the other wines in this lineup, but it has tons of character. It's the sort of wine that reveals itself gradually, over time. It is also one of the more floral, savory wines in this range. The 2018 was done with 50% whole clusters, the most in the Ojai range.
