La Spinetta was founded in 1977 when Giuseppe and Lydia Riveti had returned to Italy from their vineyard in Argentina, to produce a superior Moscato. By 1995 he was producing his first outstanding Barbaresco's from a single vineyard. He continued to acquire new land for more single vineyard bottlings.

Giuseppe's three sons eventually took over the empire and continued the growth which has lead to more than thirty Tre-Bicchieri's and been named winery of the year by Gambero Rosso, Italy's most important wine publication.

Giorgio Rivetti produces approachable yet age-worthy wines that command the attention of wine critics and consumers alike; their lushness, concentration, aromatics and length are unrivaled in Italy. "Never lose contact with the vineyard" was his parents' advice, Giorgio says and thus he and his brothers continue to be in the vineyards all year long.

"Good versions of both Barbaresco and Barolo are beautifully aromatic of red fruits, flowers, licorice and tar. They tend to be electric in acidity, and can be fiercely tannic. With aging, they develop complex flavors of truffles and earth. The best offer a mind-bending combination of intensity, finesse and grace."- NY Times

The 2005 La Spinetta Barberesco Valeirano was recently re-released as a library selection. After tasting several different vineyard bottlings from the library, Kelly and David agreed that this was the one not to miss, partly because of it's balance and harmony, and partly because it is simply gorgeous aromatically and delightful on the palette.

It is complex, gently spiced with white truffle and herb aromas and relentless in its bouquet. The Valeirano is very well structured and the tannins are soft and round. As it develops on the palette, black cherry, herbs, licorice, a hint of tobacco, mint and thyme show. It is balanced and harmonious and lingers gently.

"The Vigneto Valeirano opens with a huge, brooding nose of smoke, tar, and scorched earth. This massive, building wine changes constantly in the glass, as black cherries, wild herbs, menthol and licorice gradually take center stage. Despite its large-scaled personality, the wine possesses tons of harmony. Sweet notes of menthol and tar linger on the long finish. This explosive Barbaresco is impressive for the way it marries power to elegance. Wine Advocate, 93 points
