The Despagne family has been hard at work. Their Girolate, first introduced in 2001, was a dramatic shift in winemaking for the once lowly Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux. The region has long been known for producing decent, inexpensive Bordeaux Superier, but Girolate takes it to another level.
This 100% old vine Merlot is a big, bold, smoky, deeply layered wine with smooth, soft tannin and surprisingly low acids. Production is quite small and the wine is fussed over quite a bit.
Wine Advocate, 92 points:
The fifth vintage of this luxury cuvée from the Despagne family, this wine is treated like a spoiled child, afforded the best barrels, and the best viticulture and winemaking. The 2005 is opaque ruby/purple, with chocolate and black cherry liqueur notes, rich, broad, medium to full-bodied flavors, and terrific purity and texture. This is an absolutely amazing over-achiever and a great effort in the vintage.
