The noted wine critic Antonio Galloni has recently given a great endorsement to the wines of the Alto Piemonte. And in particular, he's singled out a few younger growers, such as Davide Carlone, who are making authentic, value-packed wines not only from the ubiquitous Nebbiolo, but also "blend" grapes, such as Croatina. And Carlone's 2017 is the kind of wine one can afford on an everyday basis, while still enjoying the complexity and generosity that wines from this sub-Alpine zone can deliver. Croatina is also less acidic and tannic than Nebbiolo, so it's perfect for more casual dining and wine lovers who find Nebbiolo a bit of a tough go. Red fruits, a hint of Alpine conifer and a good mineral backbone are on offer here.
