2014 Fontodi Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico
Lamole is a small region of Greve in Chianti perched in a natural amphitheatre between Volpaia to the south and Panzano to the west. To some, Lamole is a forgotten corner of Chianti Classico. Remember, though, that viticulture has been practiced here since Roman times. Lamole has a long history of producing elegant Sangiovese wines. While industrialization has drawn modern agriculture to the valley floor, terraced vineyards flourish on the valley walls. The 600 meter elevation and cooler conditions here result in a longer growing season than lower-elevation regions of Chianti Classico.
Fontodi’s owner-winemaker, Giovanni Manetti, has long considered Chianti Classico’s Lamole region special, and this wine proves him right. 2014 is the inaugural vintage of Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico, and the wine bursts with succulent cherries and berries, piquant minerals and herbs, and kisses of loam and pressed wildflowers. Bright acidity propels this intense wine, yet its fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks to blanket the palate with a textured, silky feel. This is a very elegant Chianti Classico that showcases Sangiovese’s finesse, rather than its raw power. Deriving from Lamole’s 17-acre, sandy-soiled Filetta vineyard, the grapes for this wine ferment in concrete, and the wine ages in oak casks for 15 months before being bottled.
