2017 Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf du Pape
One of the oldest and largest estate of Châteauneuf du Pape extending over 90 ha (220 acres) around the castle. The vineyard of Château La Nerthe was born in the XIVth century when vine culture spread over the area. Château La Nerthe, based on the work of Commander Joseph Ducos who was the owner of the estate after the phylloxera crisis, is at the root of the Châteauneuf du Pape vineyard as we know it. Baron Leroy de Boiseaumarié, from that experience, established in 1936 the first French ‘Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée’ in Châteauneuf du Pape.
This deep red Châteauneuf du Pape is very aromatic. At the very begining, the nose is very red fruit driven and then, after a couple of minutes, it becomes more spicy (sweet asian spices and pot pourri). The mouth is full of energy, very juicy. Lots of garrigue characters, herbal notes but still very fleshy. The palate is soft and dense bringing an intense sappy finish.
Tasting Panel - 94 Points
Spanning 225 acres, Château La Nerthe’s vineyards occupy a single block that has been certified organic since 1998. Their sandy clay soils boast a surface layer of the famous large, round stones called galets. All 14 of the appellation’s permitted varieties are planted here, though 62% of the vines—which average over 40 years old—are Grenache. Offering focused aromas of rhubarb, orange peel, and iron, this spiced expression has abundant personality defined by cinnamon and cranberry: It’s juicy, fresh, and vibrant, with a chewy texture and an earthy nature.
Wine & Spirits
Ample spice and tobacco notes give this a staid, old-school feel. It’s ripe and rich, with peppery notes and some maturity showing in the scents of dry leaves and forest floor. Decant it for dinner with a thick steak.
