2014 Nelle Grenache
Tyler Russell left California to work in New York and started stocking wine at a local store. He quickly became the wine buyer but was pulled back to California to explore winemaking. After some time at Justin, Zenaida and Calcareous, he started his own Nelle project in 2008. With good experience and strong ideas about growing and winemaking he has developed a reputation among winemakers as a serious artist and technician.
The wines of Nelle are blends from various vineyards and varietals. The Grenache takes fruit from two different vineyards. Some is co-fermented and some blended after fermentation.
On the nose this wine has an immediate aroma of dried strawberry and cedar. On the second sniff, sweet earthiness and dried herbs accompany the fruit. The first thing you notice once you taste is a lush almost chalky tannin. Red berries complement the structured tannins, while notes of well steeped tea, spice and dried cranberries finish her off. It finishes long but not aggressively.
