2015 Chateau Picque Caillou Blanc
Chateau Picque Caillou was built in 1780 in what was then the countryside outside of Bordeaux. It is situated near the Rocade and more importantly, just a few hundred metres from Chateau Haut Brion.
This is made from 80% Sauvignon blanc, with 20% Semillon. It is aged in oak barrels which are 30% new, with 40% having contained a wine for one year, and 30% having held two harvests. This barrel-ageing policy allows for the beneficial effects of oak aging, without risking the wine’s piercingly fresh fruitiness being muted by the casks. It will spend about 7 months in wood, then bottled promptly, to capture its vivaciousness in full.
The wine is pale, green-gold, with very clean, Sauvignon aromas of great purity showing fruitiness and flower blossoms. The palate shows explosive white fruits from the start, the middle being rich without heaviness, the finish balanced, crisp and lively.
Wine Enthusiast, 93 Points
Produced with advice from the late Denis Dubourdieu who was instrumental in revolutionizing Bordeaux white wines, this is impressive. The wood aging is just right, giving toast and allowing the ripe fruits to blossom and smooth out. The wine will age well, so don't drink before 2020.
