2017 Collusion Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet from Josh Phelps, the one member of the Phelps family that went on his own and is making delicious wine.
Alluringly deep garnet red in color, the nose of 2017 Collusion Cabernet Sauvignon is immediately generous, with deep, intense fruit in the form of sweet, ripe black plums and black cherry pie. Complex notes of clove and vanilla intertwine with these fruits on the palate, where, as the wine warms, it becomes increasingly velvety and luxurious. The finish, which retains freshness throughout, is long, with very subtle notes of damp forest floor, bay, and rich, black macerated fruits.

I was also able to taste the 2017 Collusion Cabernet Sauvignon, and while it’s from the Columbia Valley in Washington State, I’m happy to be able to include it here. Coming from a mix of Red Mountain and Horse Heaven Hills fruit and 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Malbec, and 1% Merlot, it has classic Washington State sagebrush, crushed flowers, violets, and mulled red and black fruit aromas and flavors. These carry to medium to full-bodied red that has terrific fruit, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s another screaming value from the talented Josh Phelps that’s well worth seeking out.
