Rio Mazos is the Escudero family's expression of their oldest goblet trained vines of Graciano, planted in the rocky soils of the foothills of the Sierra de Yerga. This Mediterranean subzone is the hotspot in Rioja for varieties that are typically used for blending, but Ilurce was one of the most important pioneers in the bottling of monovarietal Graciano's. Rio Mazos is characterized by the character of old vines combined with the variety's textbook freshness and crunchy texture.

Blackberry and blueberry aromas with hints of lavender. Full-bodied with firm, polished tannins and attractive vanilla, chocolate and berry at the finish. A little young now, but delicious already.

Based on 100% Graciano from old vines and two estate vineyards, the 2017 Rio Mazos sports a dense purple color as well as terrific notes of black and blue fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and an obvious sense of minerality. With subtle background oak, medium-bodied richness, silky tannins, and a great finish, this gorgeous Graciano has lots of character. It benefits from a decant today yet I suspect will keep for a solid 5-7 years, if you're so inclined. This cuvée was aged 12 months in 50% new French oak.
