Messer Oto is the name of a fountain built in the late Renaissance style, which has over time provided water and opportunity for lively meetings, right in center of the historic Venosa. Now it offers its name to this equally lively Aglianico wine.

Tasting notes : Bright ruby red with red fruits notes and delicate nuances of spices typical of the aglianico variety; the palate is dynamic showing silky texture and a long dry finish.
This is a 100% Aglianico del Vuture from vineyards with organic practices without local certification from the region of Basilicata in southern Italy.

The Latorraca family has been cultivating the vines near the town of Venosa in Basilicata since around the 1900s. For many years they sold the grapes to the local cooperative, where they were blended to make anonymous wines. In 2003, Giuseppe decided to take their old vineyard, Aglianico del Vulture, and make his own, named after the local monastery of Madonna delle Grazie. They plant one grape, Aglianico, and produce four different reds, a rosé and a white wine.

The Aglianico vines that make up Messer Otto come from the youngest vines in the family (15 years old) in the Fiano di Camera district, an area of Vinosa. A location 420 meters above sea level on limestone-filled volcanic soils (unlike the dark volcanic rocks in its other vineyards) makes this wine highly expressive with bright aromas.

The wines are bottled when ready, often amazing four years after harvest. These are always the first grapes to enter the harvest – usually during October – and receive a single, gentle pumping per day. The wine is left on its lees after a natural fermentation and micro-dosed with sulfur dioxide when necessary.
